Speaker Series Workshops

Our mission is to help members grow in spirit, mind and body. After your workout, come join us for one of these interesting presentations. The goal of the Speaker Series is to educate our members on various areas of health and wellness. Please register for a workshop at the Membership Sales and Service desk. These presentations are free for all members.

2013 Workshops

Thursday, February 7 (10:00am - 11:00am)
Location: Ernst & Young Room
Little Eaters - Healthy Eating for Toddlers
Come learn and share your experience with feeding toddlers. Topics include healthy foods and textures for toddlers, building a healthy relationship with food, mealtime struggles (picky eaters!) and real life strategies that help families eat healthy together. The session will be taught by Pamela Thoms, a Registered Dietitian.

March: Nutrition Month - 2 Sessions

Thursday, March 7 (6:00pm - 7:00pm)
Healthy Eating for Moms
Hey Moms, do you find that you have no time to eat healthy? Come learn and share strategies to fit nutrition into your busy schedule. Topics will include menu planning, healthy meal ideas, weight management tips. The session will be taught by Pamela Thoms, a Registered Dietitian.
Monday, March 25 (6:00pm - 7:00pm)
Foods to Fight Aging
Come learn what foods that can keep you feeling and looking great as you age. Topics will include prevention of memory loss, fatigue and common conditions of aging such as heart disease, stroke and osteoporosis. The session will be taught by Pamela Thoms, a Registered Dietitian.

Exercising with physical limitations
Learn to use a variety of equipment that will help you regain strength and boost confidence. This session will be taught by Jennifer Shears, a registered physiotherapist.

Thursday, May 16 (6:30pm - 7:30pm)
Location: United Way Room
Rock Climbing in Newfoundland
This presentation will talk about popular locations, techniques, safety precautions and where to begin if you are interested in rock climbing in Newfoundland. This session will be delivered by a Wallnuts climbing instructor.

Strength Training
Gain insight into developing a sound exercise regime with Mike Luke, a personal trainer and kinesiologist.

Exercise for Older Adults
Would you like to start an exercise routine but have no idea where to begin? Join us for an informative evening on exercise for older adults. The presentation will be delivered by Jeremie Dufresne, YMCA Individual Conditioning II and Group Fitness instructor and Lisa Sheppard, YMCA Fitness Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor.

We Are Water
Jill Heinerth, acclaimed underwater explorer and film maker, will give an exciting presentation of her latest project, WE ARE WATER. Rich with images and video clips, WE ARE WATER explores our physical and spiritual relationship with the water that touches our lives.

Recognized as a top cave and technical diver, Jill Heinerth produced, co-wrote and appeared in the popular PBS documentary series “Water’s Journey.”
